Family-Friendly with Great Pool and Beach, but Rooms and Food Fall Short
Abby M on Jun 04, 2025
We just got back from a four-night stay at Meliá Puerto Vallarta. After scouring tons of all-inclusive resorts in the same price range, we ultimately chose this one based on strong reviews and the location. It’s very close to the airport and just a relatively quick Uber ride to the Malecón, which was super convenient. There were definitely things we enjoyed, but also some areas that didn’t quite live up to the expectations set by other reviews. I definitely wouldn’t call it a 4-star resort, even though it’s advertised as such, maybe a 3-star. The lobby and outdoor grounds were beautiful and created a great first impression—open-air, tropical, and relaxing. But that energy didn’t carry through the whole resort. Our room (a family room with two beds and bunk beds) felt very dated and had a musty smell as soon as you walked in. There were very few usable outlets, none by the beds, so we had to charge our phones in the bathroom or by the door into the room. We even had to plug the coffee maker into the bathroom because they didn’t have it plugged in where they had it placed initially in the room. The TV had limited channels and was low quality. Cleaning staff were friendly but did the bare minimum it felt like. Towels weren’t replaced consistently, floors never really felt clean, and they don’t even provide wash cloths. Some listings mentioned bathrobes and slippers being provided, but there were none in the room. Another disappointment was the missing kid amenities. One of the reasons we booked this room was because the resort advertised welcome gifts for children as part of the family room experience. When we arrived, nothing was in the room. We had to go to the front desk to ask, and were told they no longer do that—now it’s just a small coloring book. It felt like an afterthought, especially since it wasn’t mentioned until we brought it up. The images on their website for the family room still shows the gifts that they no longer provide. The food was mixed. The buffet is open for all meals and had a great selection of fresh fruit and raw veggies. Omelets were made fresh and were probably the highlight of breakfast. Most of the cooked food was okay at best—some items were fine, but many cooked vegetables were mushy or bland, and meats were often overcooked or dry. Each night had a different buffet theme, which was a nice touch. There are also two à la carte restaurants that require reservations and are only open for dinner if you don’t have the Premium package. We thought those meals were much better than the buffet. There’s also a snack bar near the pool with hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, fries, and fresh fruit. Our kids loved that, and it was convenient for pool days. There weren’t a ton of food options overall, but enough to get by. One of the best parts of the resort was the pool. It was large and had a great shallow area for little kids. There were plenty of lounge chairs and shaded palapas both around the pool and on the beach, and we never had trouble finding a spot, even midday. That may vary by season, but we appreciated how easy it was to find seating. The included drinks, however, were underwhelming. Most cocktails were made with pre-mixed syrupy ingredients that tasted artificial. It felt like they were focused on quantity over quality as most drinks were very watered down. The staff was kind, but the resort did seem understaffed. Pool and beachside drink service was rare—we often had to go get our own. When we did receive service, it was great, but not consistent. This was our first all-inclusive experience, and maybe some of these things are standard, but we expected a bit more based on the reviews. Meliá isn’t a bad resort, and we did have fun. The location, pool, and kid-friendly atmosphere were definite positives, and our children had a great time. But if you’re expecting standout food, quality drinks, attentive service, or a room with modern conveniences like USB ports by the bed, updated TVs, or upgraded amenities, it might fall short. We’d consider coming back, but only after seeing what else is out there.
Fantastic Honeymoon

The hotel was magnificent, and we were gifted a bottle of champagne upon arrival for our honeymoon. The staff at the resort were all incredibly friendly, and the amenities including the pool and evening entertainment were fantastic. The food was delicious, with the choice of three different restaurants and a poolside kitchen. We had the most magical time and will definitely be returning.
